By Kirk James "Captain from Parchment" (Parchment, Mi USA)
I had 300+ old cassette tapes and a lot of them contain music that can't be found on iTunes. I bought the I-on U-recorder and was somewhat skeptical of what I'd get. It's a simple gadget with only the one input variable but that's all you need. The software is easy to install and operate. The interface with iTunes is easy to use (I hate iTunes) and I can't complain. I'm very satisfied with this product and would recommend it to anyone. I haven't tried it with vinyl yet but I'm assuming that I'll get the same output.

Copying and then filtering scratchy vinyl recordscan be daunting, but Ion's "U-record", with its advanced editing features, is an amateur's dream!Don't call me for the next year. I'm busy converting!, August 21, 2009
By Steve Shubert (Santa Monica, CA United States)
Use of this product is based mostly on the software selected; this review is specifically when using the Audacity software, which was so easy it's hard to believe they also included something that is apparently even easier (EZ Vinyl Converter).
I love this product! I have converted over 50 complete albums so far. Once you've recorded you can easily assign labels to each track. Then you can export in wave format, Ogg Vorbis (?), or MP3. I always use MP3 at 192 Kbps; it's a good compromise between quality and a useful compression ratio. The `Export Multiple' function allows you to submit the additional metadata (artist, album title, genre, year) once; it then exports each song, with the pre-assigned label as the song name, and all the metadata is automatically included. Thus, later, if you are in the Windows file system and you hover your mouse over a song you can see the artist, album title etc. without having to first access it via music software.
There are some definite oversights and flaws in the software. Here are some tips that can make things much easier:
1. Use legal file names for your labels. Audacity will accept several characters that Windows (& I'm guessing Mac too) will not, but when you go to export it the export will fail. You don't get an explanation for the failure either, so it took me some time to figure this out, but I haven't had a single failure since I started conforming.
2. Volume make a huge difference; always record as loudly as you can short of pinning it at zero! I try to have the higher levels go to about -3 on the record-meter, and if an occasional spike hits the zero mark it's OK. In the beginning I was too worried about distortion from recording too loudly, and I ended up having to go back and re-record my first few albums.
3. Audacity will not accept a lower case `z' when assigning labels! I have no clue why, but just use a capital `Z' instead and it works fine.
4. If you expect to do a lot of editing it's a good idea to save a `raw' version of the project, and edit a separate copy. That way you can back up and start over easily if you're not sure how to undo something, without having to record it all again first.
5. The projects are HUGE. It takes about a half-gigabyte for a project (an album), so once I have exported several albums I copy those MP3 files to a CD and delete the project files, leaving only the MP3 versions still on the computer. I get about 12 albums to a CD.
6. Occasionally the album is severely scratched and I need noise reduction. It's very easy; the main caveat is to not clean up all the dead space first, because Audacity needs a `noise profile' to figure out what to remove, and the dead space at the front or back of the recording is the best place to get it. If you do remove noise be sure and preview it and adjust the level of removal desired. It will flatten the sound somewhat, but it's still better than something so noisy it's unusable. In one case removing the noise also removed half of the song because the software could not distinguish between ocean waves and distortion ("Love From Room 109 at the Islander" by Tim Buckley).
The software has many powerful options that I have yet to explore. You can add special effects, combine different music sources into a single output, and much more. I give this product five stars even though it has flaws. Between the very low price, the trivial setup, and the power of the software, this is a top candidate for the best $50 I ever spent.

I purchased mine lightly used for $83, and for that price I am happy, though I don't believe this item is worth it's MSRP. It imports the music into your computer wonderfully, the tone arm and cartridge are both sturdy.
My only concerns with the turntable is that it is very sensitive to vibrations, so while I'm recording I have to sit very still and not touch my desk, otherwise it'll be picked up in the recording, this is partially because it is made out of plastic (which doesn't shock absorb quite as well as metal). And partially because it's a turntable (which turntables are known to pick up a little as well)
My other concern is that the platter is plastic rather than metal, which I fear may warp over time. Also the platter doesn't sit down in it's crater far enough.
Also the 45RPM adapter is ok, but a real 45 adapter would work better. (sometimes the record slips under my 45 adapter during play, which, obviously makes it not play correctly.

I just purchased this Ion turntable($99) from Costco and I was very reluctant because of many past reviews. Just finished recording/converting my first LP and putting it on a CD. Approx 90 minutes total but about 30 minutes wasted because of a dumb mistake. All in all this is a great divice and well worth the price. It is almost plug-n-play.

If you have albums that you took care of and want to convert them to an easier to use format like CD then this is the product for you.The ION TTUSB05 Turntable was easy to setup and begin using right out of the box.The package included two recording softwares EZ Vinyl Recorder which is straight-forward no frills and Audacity which has a learning curve that I have not had the time to get to yet.Put an album on..hit the record button and away you go..you do have to pay attention with EZ Vinyl if you wish to separate the tracks as you go but that is not so bad if you are enjoying your classic sounds anyway. It also doesn't have any tools for removing pops and clicks but if your albums are in good condition, as many of mine are, your finished product will sound great! When I learn the process for recording with Audacity I will post again but right now I am enjoying being able to listen to my classic albums in an easy to use format like CD.The first albums I converted were Mandre "Mandre",Seawind "Window Of A Child" and Captain Sky "The Adventures of Captain Sky" three albums that I could not find on CD anywhere(reasonably priced that is).I popped them into my CD carousel put on shuffle and I have been listening to them non-stop since. For what I would have had to pay for these albums at "import" prices(if I could even find them)this turntable has already paid for itself and I get to use it again and again!Buy..Try..Enjoy.
iTunes 9 compatability problem , September 29, 2009
By Anonymous
Just a warning. As of this writing, September 29, 2009 there is a problem with compatibility with iTunes 9. I have corresponded with ION technical support and they say, "Currently EZ Vinyl Converter is not supported with iTunes 9.0. We are working on a fix. [...]
On some occasions the software works and on others it does not--I can record tracks but get the error message: "unable to export to iTunes."
The turntable is product is great, but if you use iTunes 9 (and unless you want to use the Audacity recording method--far more time consuming [my experience]) you may not be able to use this until they fix the software. Just what I expected , September 25, 2009

By Indie Insomniac (Bradenton, FL USA)
There's nothing spectacular about this turntable, but given the price and availability of turntables this is actually decent for those new to vinyl records or anyone with a pile of old dusty records they haven't played in years. This is a fairly straight forward turntable if just playing a record. The USB feature allows for the added plus of importing and editing. This may be alluring to anyone wanting to convert their old records to play on their computers or mp3 players or to even make cds. The software provided is ideal for both beginners and those with a little experience importing music. My only issue is that importing the music with the USB doesn't provide excellent audio quality. Some music transfers alright, but most of the time the audio seems kind of dull and lifeless. I've found that audio quality is a little better if you get a cable to connect the turntable's stereo RCA cables to your computer's microphone or audio input jack. If you're looking for a basic turntable for playing or recording music, this is it. However, if you are a true audiophile there are better, albeit, more expensive options out there.
Pros:
>Simple design.
>Decent price for a USB turntable.
>Acceptable audio quality.
>Audio recording software for beginners and those with a little experience.
>Plays at 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, with adapter for playing 45s.
>Dust cover.
>Buttons for raising and lowering tone arm and stopping record playback.
Cons:
>USB doesn't provide great audio quality.
>Not the most attractive turntable.

Very nice and simple addition to our audio collection. Dust off the vinyl since this is a great little toy that allows us to go back in time. Very fun.

The turntable itself works well so far. You can hear a click whenever you push the pause button to start or stop the turntable during recording. The only way to avoid hearing the click on the recording is to not start recording until after you have pushed the pause button. That is not what the instructions tell you.
When recording a song, it often duplicates the track in i-tunes so you automatically get the record track twice.
Why, I have no idea.

I found this fairly easy to connect to my computer. I have a Sony Vaio and I use SonicStage Mastering Studio for burning my records to CD's. I would recommend this product. Great Idea, not so great product, August 8, 2009
By Bob "Bob" (California)
I was expecting a great product here, but i did not get one.
First off, the record player did not have a cover to protect the machine, which is expensive to buy.
Secondly, when we started recording, the record player was able to pick up background noise, which ruined the quality.
And lastly, the gain/volume control for it is on the back in one of the most awkward places ever.
So, unless you have a very quite house, patience, and a lot of vinyl cleaner, you might consider this, but you could just hook your old record player up to an amp and buy a 1/8 to RCA cable for 1 cent.

Or even a 1/8 cable with a 1/4 adapter to plug into the headphones slot of the amp and then into the computer.Monster AI STUDIOLINK iStudioLink 1/4-Inch Mono Female to 1/8-Inch Stereo Male Instrument Interconnect CableIon TTUSB Turntable with USB Record , July 17, 2009

Ion TTUSB Turntable with USB Record
With the turntable itself, which I purchased to salvage my old lp's into cds, I am quite pleased. It is precision made and the output quality is excellent. The software provides many functions for improvement, such as scratch removal, level adjustment, etc. The separate aux audio input jack is very nice for recording other audio through the USB as well.
On the negative side, the software included is a bummer. Equalizer and other adjustments seem quite ineffective. There are two alternative programs for recording. The "simple" one requires you to buy into "Itunes," for which, being a freedom loving American I have no use. It's a real hassle trying to use your music which they've taken over in a special folder they make for you, and hide it from you with a Pollack engineered pathname (at least under Windows XP, which I use).
The other program, which gives the user more freedom to do what he wants, independent of 3rd parties, somewhat, does not allow recording into the mp3 format (only .wav), which is the first choice anyone would have. It is possible, however, to go to the internet and get a plug-in to enable this. I don't know why ION doesn't supply this themselves.
Also, the resulting recording from the memory onto disk is EXTREMELY slow. Almost as if it were played and recorded again.
Bob
